No New Engine For American GTI

E-mail Print PDF

The 2010 North American GTI retains its 200-horse turbo.

While other countries get a significantly revamped 2.0T turbo four-
cylinder to go along with the sharp new styling of their new GTI, North America will soldier on with the previous engine,

which is slightly less powerful and fuel efficient — but nonetheless still outstanding.

This information was confirmed by, public-relations coordinator with Volkswagen Of America,

who said the new engine is not certified for use here. At least not yet.

The new 2.0T engine has been thoroughly upgraded with modified pistons and piston rings, a regulated oil pump, new vacuum pump,

new high-pressure fuel pump and new mass airflow sensor. The result is 210 horsepower, 10 more than before, and average fuel consumption of 32 miles per gallon,

nearly three-MPG improved.

Torque is identical at 207 pound-feet but is available over a broader range — from 1,700 RPM (100 lower) to 5,200 RPM (200 higher).

Wegehaupt did say that higher-powered special-edition models are in the works, possibly alluding to the GTI R

He did not yet have details to share about these special models.

The 2010 GTI was released in Europe one month ago and will come to the United States and Canada by late summer.

Sanford Bernstein London issued a devastating report on Thursday, May 14, suggesting several scenarios over the next six months in which Porsche (PSHG_p.DE) would be compelled to walk away from the proposed merger with VW, announced on May 6, and unwind some of the investment it has already made in acquiring 51% of the automaker.
